Auckland Museum

Housed in one of the country’s most striking heritage buildings in the heart of the Auckland Domain is New Zealand’s oldest museum. Auckland War Memorial Museum houses the most significant collection of Maori & Pacific treasures in the world. Spread over three magnificent floors, the Museum tells the story of New Zealand’s emergence as a nation, from the great Polynesian voyages which first brought people to Aotearoa (NZ), to the diverse cultures & communities that make up modern Auckland. It portrays the diversity of NZ’s unique landscape & explores the country’s military history in moving exhibitions, which mark the museum’s status as a war memorial.

The Maori Treasure Gallery displays over 2,000 priceless Maori treasures, including rare carvings & the last great Maori war canoe used in battle. Adjacent to these treasures are the Pacific masterpieces & Lifeways galleries presenting Pacific arts, history & culture. These galleries & others, tell the story of NZ’s people & their place in the Pacific.

On the first floor, natural history galleries tell the story of NZ’s unique flora, fauna & geology. We can see the huge moa skeletons & a three- storey-high kauri tree. These galleries trace NZ’s ancient origins to the great lost continent of Gondwana & are complemented by award-winning children’s discovery centers.

On the top floor, Halls of Memory record the names of Aucklanders lost in conflict while Scars on the Heart, the Museum’s memorial exhibition, tells the emotional story of New Zealanders at war.

The Museum Store enjoys an international reputation for quality gifts, which also include handcrafted jade, glass & ceramics, along with Maori carvings & kete (flax bags). Experience Maori culture by joining Manaia, in a lively performance of song, dance & stories.

Dimdima is the Sanskrit word for ‘drumbeat’. In olden days, victory in battle was heralded by the beat of drums or any important news to be conveyed to the people used to be accompanied with drumbeats.
